Who do we believe? Images, institutions, or social media?

Impressive images move us all. Yet today, AI can create equally compelling scenarios—emotional, believable, viral. How real is what we are seeing?

Tourism & social media

How does a place become a viral bucket-list destination?

The new image pair was created in collaboration with ALPS Alpine Museum of Switzerland. There, you can further explore tourism, landscapes, and images of the Alps. The "Souvenir" exhibition gives a voice to tourists on the Jungfraujoch, a souvenir shop owner, and the mayor of Iseltwald, inviting you to reflect on your own travel habits.

History, images & staging

How does an event become a grand narrative?

The exhibition "Murten, exploited. A victory is staged" at the Bernisches Historisches Museum shows how the victory at the Battle of Murten has been depicted, utilized, and reinterpreted over the centuries. This connects perfectly with WTFake: historical images, objects, and narratives are never entirely neutral; they are selected, staged, and imbued with meaning. The BHM also offers guided tours and panorama tours on this topic.

Press photos & sources

What makes an image a credible document?

An original photograph from the "Swiss Press Photo 26" exhibition at the Swiss National Library serves as the basis for one of the new WTFake image pairs.

Einstein: Man and Myth

How is the image of a genius created?

The WTFake image pair featuring Albert Einstein meets the Einstein Museum at the Bernisches Historisches Museum. There, you can discover the person behind the world-famous image — exploring his life, his ideas, and the historical context of his time. The Einstein Museum connects his biography with the political and social developments of the 20th century.

Communication & the second look

Why do we believe some images more readily than others?
At the Museum of Communication, interactive stations, surprising objects, and large-scale video screens help communicators share the fascination surrounding the world of communication.
